I am Gregorio Gavier, a landscape ecologist. I am a researcher at INTA (National Institute of Agricultural Technology) and CONICET (National Research Council) of Argentina, based at UDEA in Córdoba. In our research group (ECODI – Ecology and Design of Conservation Landscapes), we study how agricultural expansion changes spatial patterns in productive landscapes and wildland-urban interfaces, as well as the effect of those patterns on biodiversity and related ecological processes. Our ecoregions of interest are the forested and wetland areas of Argentina, including the plains and sierras of the Chaco, the Espinal, the Monte in the xeric west, and the Paraná River Delta. We focus on vertebrates, mainly mammals and birds, but also grasses and human-wildlife conflicts in wildland-urban interfaces. Our goal is to use our research findings to collaborate with landowners, NGOs, and government agencies to design landscapes that balance production with biodiversity conservation across multiple spatial scales.
