Oleksandra Shumilova

Visiting Scientist

My name is Oleksandra Shumilova, I am an ecosystem ecologist whose research encompasses multiple research directions related to human-nature interactions and sustainable development. I am in particular interested in studying interactions of abiotic processes and biota on river floodplains using synergy of field experiments, numerical modeling, statistical and theoretical analysis of data with the purpose to develop quantitative understanding of natural processes and to implement them into practical conservation programs. I work as a postdoc at the Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries in Berlin, but presently I am a “Scientist in Residence” at the Conservation Biogeography Lab thanks to Caroline von Humboldt prize. In my project at HU I am focusing on understanding reestablishment of riverine ecosystems affected by collapses of dams due to military actions in Ukraine and how it is mediated by self-organization processes.
